How Are Your Opponents Actually Playing?

In the July/August 2006 issue of this magazine is a wonderful article written by Vanessa Rousso about the changed state of the game. I started playing poker a few months before the WPT and Chris Moneymaker’s WSOP victory catapulted poker into the mainstream, and I remember that back then, when I looked for a profitable game, all I needed to do was look for a loose, action filled game. At both the limit and the no-limit hold ’em tables, games where four or five passive gamblers saw the flop were commonplace, and, indeed, those were good times! There was a lot of easy money to be made at games like $500NL hold ’em and $20-$40 limit hold ’em, and quite simply, the bad players were easily identifiable as the ones who never folded; the loose players just chased, chased, and chased. Because calling stations were abundant and easily beatable, the term “loose” became synonymous with “bad”, and the term “tight” became synonymous with “good.” ...
